My best friend and I meet as often as we can to swim together, whatever the season, and just that we decided to do on Thursday night. It was an impulsive bathing trip where we both were so eager that we completely forgot to double check an important thing.
Once before, my friend and I have been to a floating sauna in the middle of Oslo’s vibrant city life. The floating sauna is located on Sørenga, very central but still well sheltered from all the hustle and bustle that belongs to the city life. Here you can enjoy a refreshing ice bath followed by a warm and inviting sauna experience. And that was exactly what we had planned for this Thursday night.
When we arrived we see that up to several guests are already present at both saunas, and it was a bit strange as it was still ten minutes left for opening hours. To clarify, there are two side-by-side saunas, one home-made and charming while the other is more lavish and spacious, both of which are open on so-called “drop-in” days and not all week.
Hopeful and with suspicion that maybe someone had rented both saunas despite the fact that it was a “drop-in” day, we wandered down to the pier at Sørenga where we were greeted by the sauna master. He confirmed our suspicions that both saunas were booked, but as it turned out, it was not a “drop-in” day either! We had therefore gone on a real hit & miss. I can not quite describe the disappointment that arose between us – how we had managed to not double check!? And no, there was no opportunity to be allowed to ask one of the groups if we could pay to be with them – which by the way is fully understandable.
We tried desperately to find a solution to our disappointment – there was even a third sauna nearby but this one can only be pre-ordered, hence it was out of the question. In my frustration of having traveled relatively far (not that it is extremely far to Oslo from Slemmestad, but far enough when it is only one errand one is looking to do), I chose to bathe anyway. It was a magical experience with a gorgeous sunset that spread over a cloudless sky.
Tonight we are going back to the saunas at Sørenga – and this time we are 100% sure that it is actually a “drop-in” day.
